July 24: Note from Mel & New Home Pic
Our heart transplant journey has brought us far and there have been many challenges along the way. Yet we’ve seen Jehovah’s hand in ways we never imagined. From getting Lawrence here to getting him a heart to helping us find a permanent residence.
The blessings have truly been amazing and we’re confident it’s because we kept everything before Him in prayer trusting he would satisfy our needs if it would benefit us.
Yesterday we moved into our permanent home, all thanks to Jehovah.
Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for His endless blessings, love, and guidance every step of the way. “Unless Jehovah builds the house…” —Psalm 127:1a
Never doubt the power of prayer or stop trusting Jehovah in all things.
July 23: Moving Day!
We’re moving into our permanent home today, all thanks to Jehovah. Our hearts are overflowing with gratitude for His endless blessings, love, and guidance every step of the way. “Unless Jehovah builds the house…” —Psalm 127:1a
July 22: Family Training Rehab Day
Today was family training at rehab, and I got to spend the entire day with Lawrence. It was such a blessing to meet his therapists, participate in some hands-on training with them, and see firsthand the progress he’s made.
He still has a ways to go, but he’s come so far already, and I couldn’t be more excited and encouraged by his accomplishments.
Please continue praying that his strength and progress keep improving each day.
July 20: Note from Mel & New Video
We had a full weekend enjoying our convention program, and it felt so good to be there with everyone.
Brother Little had to stream the program from his room at rehab, and he said he was so grateful for that arrangement because it made him feel like he was right there with us.
At times, I struggle with feelings that we’re a burden or a liability, but the friends here continue to reassure us of their love and support.
I can’t express how grateful we are to Jehovah for bringing us to this congregation. I can’t remember a time when we’ve felt so loved and cared for.
Please continue to keep not only us, but our entire brotherhood, in your prayers, asking Jehovah to give all of us the strength we need to endure each day.

July 3: Note from Mel
One of the things I’ve come to appreciate so much is that as Jehovah’s Witnesses, we’re more than just a worldwide organization—we’re truly a family. Even when we’ve never met before, we immediately feel connected. We carry one another’s burdens, celebrate each other’s victories, and grieve together when one of us hurts.
Being here at Chicago Medicine has made that even more real to me. When one of our brothers or sisters comes here for a heart transplant, there’s such a feeling of hope and anticipation. Complete strangers become dear friends as we encourage one another and wait together for good news.
A couple of weeks ago, I met a sweet sister and her husband who had come here for his heart transplant. Almost every day, I would see him faithfully walking the halls with his nurse. We had the chance to talk, and after he was moved just a couple of doors down from Lawrence’s room, I also spent some time visiting with him and his family.
Just 48 hours ago, he received his new heart. We were all so happy and hopeful for them.
Today, my heart is so heavy because I learned that he passed away.
I can’t stop thinking about his dear wife and their family. Even though I only knew them for a short time, that’s what being part of Jehovah’s family does—it makes someone else’s pain feel personal.
Please keep this dear family in your prayers. I know Jehovah is close to those who are brokenhearted, and I pray that He gives them the comfort, strength, and peace they need in the difficult days ahead.
July 2: New Video
Lawrence created a new video to wish Melanie a Happy Anniversary!
June 27: Out of ICU
Moved from ICU to the rehab unit to receive physical therapy until he regains physical strength. Continuing dialysis, and kidneys are showing signs of recovery.
June 18: Post-Surgery Challenges
Experienced some confusion due to a few "mini-strokes" (likely TIAs or small embolic strokes). The great news is that his imaging shows no permanent damage or brain scarring. Currently stable.
June 17: Continued Progress
Awoke feeling grateful for the gift of a new heart and another anniversary together.
Participated in physical therapy and showed encouraging improvement while sitting on the side of the bed. Goal is to sit up in the recliner tomorrow.
Completed a swallowing evaluation with speech therapy in preparation for resuming meals. Currently on a low-microbial diet.
Receiving continuous dialysis treatment to help remove excess fluid, with positive results so far.
June 16: Physical Therapy Begins
Participated in the first physical therapy session. Each small milestone is an encouraging step forward in the recovery journey.
June 15: Recovery Update
Recovery continues. Kidney function is being supported with dialysis while the medical team closely monitors progress.
The breathing tube has been removed, and resting comfortably.
June 13: Recovery Begins
Now settled into the recovery unit. The medical team will gradually begin the awakening process. We are thankful for a successful surgery and encouraged by the initial progress.
June 13 | 7:00 am: Surgery Complete
Surgery is complete, and recovery has begun. We are grateful for the skilled medical team and this precious gift of life.
June 13 | 4:01 am: Successful Implant
The new heart has been successfully implanted, and everything is progressing well. Thank you for keeping us in your prayers.
June 13 | 2:01 am: Major Milestone
The new heart is being implanted. We are overwhelmed with gratitude and thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support.
June 12: Surgery Underway
Surgery officially began at 11:10 p.m. Chicago time. Thank you for your continued prayers for the donor family and medical team.
June 12: Preparing for Surgery
Heart transplant surgery is scheduled for this evening. We are grateful, hopeful, and appreciative of all the prayers and support during this life-changing moment.
